The outlook for ASEAN’s Digital Economy Framework Agreement

Published 12 November 2024

As ASEAN sets ambitious goals to seal a Digital Economy Framework Agreement by the end of next year, the Hinrich Foundation hosted a roundtable with the Coalition for Digital Prosperity for Asia, NexTrade Group, and Amazon Web Services to brainstorm and seek insights into the outlook and key sticking points of the negotiations.

The Hinrich Foundation and the Coalition for Digital Prosperity for Asia (DPA), an advocacy group for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) staffed largely by the consultancy APCO, held a freewheeling brainstorm session on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ Digital Economy Framework Agreement.

Moderated by DPA's Asia-Pacific Partnerships Lead and APCO senior associate director Gareth Tan, the roundtable explored key sticking points in the ongoing negotiations for the regional digital agreement. Kati Suominen, chief executive officer of NexTrade Group and concurrently Hinrich Foundation Research Fellow, provided a briefing on the digital landscape in Southeast Asia. Co-organizers and guests included Amazon Web Services, Google, Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Malaysian High Commission to Singapore, the Australian High Commission to Singapore, the EU-ASEAN Business Council, the Tech For Good Institute, as well as digitally-oriented SMEs operating in the region such as education-focused software firm Kinobi.

Here are some photos from the roundtable:
