“I aim to work towards creating a proactive risk management approach to limit the implications of strategic weaponization of trade by nations and foster sustainable trade growth.”

Scholar background

Mukta has experience as a geopolitical analyst specializing in security risks in the Asia-Pacific region. Before pursuing her master’s degree at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, she served as a Junior Geopolitical Risk Analyst at MAX Security Solutions for more than two years, working on assessment and forecast reports on regional events, as well as custom reports for major clients in the oil, gas and apparel industries.

She began her geopolitical risk career in assessment across Sub-Saharan Africa and India as a Geopolitical Risk Intelligence Intern for Africa and Asia-Pacific at World Risk Governance (WORISGO) in Bangalore, India.

She graduated from K. C. College, University of Mumbai, India in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and completed a Postgraduate Diploma in International Studies from University of Mumbai, India in 2019.

Personal statement

The present global trade situation is calling into question the notion that trade between nations restricts war and creates peace. Instead, the strategic weaponization of trade and trade routes, as part of the prevailing geopolitical rivalry in the Indo-Pacific region, has led to supply chain uncertainties and a decline in free trade. As an Asia-Pacific geopolitical risk analyst, I have seen how targeted trade sanctions and changes in trade policies to gain geopolitical leverage affect supply chain resilience, business continuity, and countries’ growth and national security.

My goal is to master assessing and forecasting trade behaviours and associated security threats among Asian nations and work towards safeguarding geoeconomic stability. As a Master’s in International Affairs student, I seek to gain a deeper understanding of maritime geopolitics and explore geo-intelligence. I am confident that the program will help me fill my knowledge gaps and enhance my analytical skills through its balanced approach towards pragmatic and theoretical understanding of the discipline. I look forward to engaging with the LKYSPP’s “Centre on Asia and Globalisation” to advance research on contemporary concerns like maritime trade security in the Indo-Pacific.

I believe I have a unique gateway to realizing these aspirations as a Hinrich Global Trade Leader Scholar. As a part of the Hinrich Foundation community, I will work to expand my horizons and learn more about the craft of leadership and working in the field of international relations from my fellow scholars and alumni. The Foundation is the perfect avenue to facilitate an unbiased and advanced discourse on trade and foster an intellectual network, which will enrich my professional journey and the ultimate objective of geoeconomic sustainability.
